i'm on vacation...
for the first time since our honeymoon 4 years ago i'm taking a vacation ... back to the cottage where we spent our first week of married life for 5 days.

4 years without a vacation is a really long time ... unless you call unemployment a vacation.

open your bag please sir ...
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=967221 - NYC cops now have the right to randomly search backpacks and other 'containers' as you enter the subway station.

i have my doubts about visiting new york after this and reading about NYC cops kickin' the shit out of BSS guitarist dave newfeld (second story) for buying 20 bucks worth of reefer... (note: have someone local pick your weed up for you ...don't risk getting busted on show day!)

those that do not allow their bags to be searched will not be allowed to ride the subway. those with contraband will be arrested (such as drugs or weapons of mass destruction) ...and i imagine if you don't want to open your bag that you can expect police to follow you home to ransack your house.

welcome to the new world order ... please have your bag ready to be searched before entry.

scotty got beamed up...
after a battle with alzheimers, james doohan is dead. i knew he was a canadian actor but didn't know he served in the royal canadian artillery in WWII...

i remember saturday mornings with my mom watching star trek reruns ... i liked scotty cause he didn't care what the captain said, he spoke his mind freely. i'm not a miracle worker (although he did get whales into his ship later on in his career and considered that to be a miracle), the ship can't handle much more (it always did ...except when they decided to blow it up), and my favorite ... he knew how to applaud a stripper (when kirk gets green bootie) ..everyone else flashes the lights on their table and scotty hoots and hollers like it's a nudie bar.

i always wanted a tribble for a pet...

goodbye mr. scott ... may the force be with you.

lobbing bombs...
the words never forget seem to pop up each time something bad happens in the world. i don't think hiroshima or nagasaki forgot ... new york will never forget ... and now london will never forget. the next bomb that goes off won't be forgotten either ... riiiiight? the victims never forget ... it's the rest of us that require a prompt from time to time.

i found this article today...

a buddhist monk started a fire from the embers of the city of hiroshima as it burned after the atomic attack on august 6th 1945... the fire has been lit for 60 years.

several monks (with the remains of the fire) arrived in san fransisco this weekend (july 16) to continue their journey from their home near hiroshima to the original atomic testing grounds in new mexico to extinguish the flame at its site of origin. july 16th marked the date a ship left san fransisco for japan containing pieces of the first atomic bomb in 1945.
Quote :
In the eastern calendar, 60 is the end of a cycle. I would like to bring the flame back to the place it came from and extinguish it in the hope that there won't be another use of nuclear weapons ever again.

Rev. Keishi Miyamoto

i wonder if the actual extinguishing ceremony will be newsworthy for major media amongst all the war and scandal?

pink floyd donate royalties ...
Quote :
from JAMmusic @ canoe.ca
FLOYD FEUD CONTINUES

For many people, the highlight of Live 8 was the reunion of Pink Floyd.

(Except, apparently for the folks at MTV who reportedly cut to commercial in the middle of the band's set.)

Well, no one can question their integrity and sincerity for the cause, with news the band has turned down lucrative offers to continue the reunion.

David Gilmour -- who has been feuding for years with bandmate Roger Waters including, reportedly, backstage at the charity gig -- told U.K. newspaper The Sun (no relation to the Calgary Sun) Pink Floyd has been offered $150 million to do gigs in the States. It's completely mad -- and we won't do it.

Thankfully, Gilmour didn't invoke the when hell freezes over cliche, which last gave us a never-ending series of final tours by the disinterested Eagles at a ticket price more bloated than Joe Walsh's liver.

Gilmour gets extra points for donating royalties received from the incredible boost in Pink Floyd album sales thanks to their Live 8 appearance. Which begs the question: There are still people who don't own Dark Side of the Moon?

i was so stoked to read that floyd will be donating the increase in royalties ...bless em for really understanding what charity is. the projected bump in record sales from publicity for a lot of the artists at the canadian show was most likely the reason some wanted to play. nothing like a worldwide audience to try and boost record sales for les trois accords. wtf were they doin' on that bill in the first place ... still beyond me.

britney having twins??
yes i'm guilty ... i oogle britney spears. the latest rumor is she's having twins.

some of my friends think it's an odd infatuation (same with my love of the barbapappas) ... but really ... she's pretty sexy (unlike the barbapappas). the downside is i find her to be a complete idiot (and not like just kinda dorky like the barbapappas ...i mean the village idiot type idiot). she demonstrated it best in farenheit 9/11 when she said americans should all just trust the president ...and even then i found myself oogling her. the barbapappas weren't in farenheit 9/11, but i think they should have had a say too if she did.

friends often send me britney related links - the ebaulmsworld.com flash movie the mystery of britney spears breasts is great ...i'd never seen it until sprecker posted the link on irc recently. after watching it i found another video discussing the subliminal messages in hit me baby one more time (rather old but still funny)

i've been listening to the new foo fighers disc over and over again while resting a very stiff and sore lower back for the last few days. what a great record ...just fat track after fat track of david grohl-y goodness.

drivers: please use your turnsignals when driving down princess street ... it's very painful to have to jump your bike up on the curb to avoid being smashed by some idiot's last second turn without looking or signalling

prego-britney goes out shopping...

lukes lightsabre up for auction
damn would i like to have an extra $100k-200k sitting in the bank at the end of this month when some very cool star wars memorabilia goes up for auction @ profiles in history auction house. items up for sale include a partial chewbacca mask, one of yoda's canes, a stormtrooper blaster, luke's x-wing flight suit and a few other odds and ends that would be cool to own (check the link for full listing).

gary kurtz (producer of a new hope and empire, amongst other films) collected a few pieces from each movie he worked on and over the years has amassed quite a collection of cool toys ... he's auctioning off several pieces to fund some new acquisitions for the Kurtz/Joiner Archive (preserving movie history).

i'd love to have a stormtrooper blaster or luke's lightsabre ...

the deal with the devil comes to an end...
karla's free to walk the streets again ... homolka that is ... after 12 years in prison for the rape/murder of two teenage girls in st. catharine's in the early 1990s as well as the rape/accidental death of her own sister (who chocked on her own vomit during a drug induced rape)

she was the crown's chief witness in the paul bernado trial ...portraying the obedient battered wife fearful of her husband if she didn't comply with his requests. then they found the gruesome video tapes depiciting brutal sexual acts and demonstrating her very active participation in the crimes, but it was too late as she'd already secured her deal with the prosecution (they wanted paul bernardo BAD).

karla lived in kingston for many of her 12 years locked up ... about 500-1000 feet from her husband across the road at kingston pen (they never wrote). i used to ride by the women's prison daily on the bus to school wondering, does she know we're studying her like a lab experiment in class? i decided that anyone in her situation would probably understand that people would be paying extremely close attention to thier every action.

so now that she's out she's decided to take up residence in quebec and live her life as a francophone. frankly, they can have her. i have no ill will towards the woman on a personal level, i'd just prefer not to have a convicted murdering, sex offender living anywhere near my cats. we've got crazy all taken care of in my neighborhood ...

despite statements from her lawyer that she did not plan on addressing the media ...karla walked out of jail and into the radio-canada offices in quebec to do an interview almost immediately (she probably went to get a poutine first) ... it's apparent she used her prison time well; earning herself a BA and learning to speak fluent french (i'm SO glad i got to pay for her education AND my education at the same time with my tax dollars - it means i contributed to her rehabilitation!)

continuing to play herself off as a victim she talked about being out of jail but 'not free'. now that she's out she should live like every other normal citizen of the country. if the media wanted to set up shop on my front step and watch me, they could (if i'd done anything interesting like killing a few folks odds are they would). playing to the french media was a great ploy to earn some cred with quebecers ...especially trash talking and comparing the english and french media in canada.

the devil is out of jail ...what's next ...clifford olsen workin' at the YMCA??

here's my way of saying welcome back to free society, miss teale:

Live8 Rocked!
saturday morning we turned on live8 on ctv and watched for a while ...before realizing that AOL was streaming the shows from multiple cities on their website. we flipped back and forth between cities with no commercials AND a wicked 450k/sec stream (almost perfect full screen viewing). we had the tv on showing the global feed to catch anything really good a second time.

the canadian show wasn't as good as it could have been i thought. the audio quality of the broadcast was complete shit both online and on teevee (it actually sounded better in my computer room with a subwoofer). by far the worst audio quality of all the venues.

watching a reunited pink floyd was the highlight of the show for sure ...breathe / money / wish you were here / comfortably numb was the setlist. they played amazingly and they all looked like they were really enjoying being on stage, together! nick mason was just sick silly good ... dude is the only guy with such a monstrous drumkit that doesn't overplay ...and the sound of his toms ... those big, slow single stroke fills he does in comfortably numb were just silly good sounding.

reading fark this morning i came across a discussion about MTVs broadcast - cutting off pink floyd to go to a commercial. with their demographic not really being old enough to know who pink floyd is, it's pretty easy to figure out why VJs were talking during the set and then cut off comfortably numb to go to a commercial ... insane from my perspective. there's some pretty pissed off folks at the MTV forum.

my favs of the day
- u2 came out with paul mccartney and played sgt pepper (so good)
- REM in london was sooooo good.
- coldplay (great)
- greenday in berlin
- keane in london was very tasty
- travis was excellent
- will smith really pumped up philly all day
- bruce cockburn - if i had a rocket launcher and call it democracy

there was some trouble in barrie regarding food vendor licensing and ticket scalping ..i'm sure it happened everywhere ...but it's just wreched that some chose to profit off the show ...not geared at raising funds but raising awareness. food vendors should not have had to pay the city a tax to provide their service to the showgoers - that's what drives prices higher (of course the city will claim to provide some kind of inspection or service for this fee - but bylaw officers weren't able to check the validity of some licenses all day long!). some licensed vendors ended up throwing away food at the end of the day (does that make sense ... tossing out food and claiming a financial loss at a show geared to raise awareness of aids / famine / poverty globally)

read the article in canoe

i hope you signed the petition - http://www.live8live.com

we watched potluck (from the publishers of high times magazine) - great movie.

i went out on friday to shoot some pics of my friend kherson drumming:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA!!
i really enjoy canada day ... i like being canadian.

while consuming beer last night (a little pre-canada day celebration) i finally found a copy of 'duck and cover' - the 1950's atomic disaster educational film shown to students during the beginning of the coldwar. the last time i went to the internet movie archive it wasn't available but it was last night when i decided to get a couple movies to watch there.

the prelinger archive on the site is full of old promotional videos and short educational films that are always a good laugh. other than duck and cover, my favorites have been the hormel meat processing plant tour (1965) (the basis for the simpsons educational film on meat processing) and an excellent 1965 grocery store check out clerk training film full of old product shots and some very outdated grocery store practices (the cashier smiled and said thank you!!)

there's an old mcdonald's training video on the important of smiling for the customer that i'm trying to hunt down again. i've seen it before ...but didn't bother to save it. if anyone has it or a link to it (or other similar videos) please comment here.

the hunt begins ...but first i have beer to drink.

many happy returns canada! (i'll post some pics of the fireworks later)
