as time goes by i realize .... |
|
i really am an asshole to work with in a band. a belated thanks to those who have pointed it out over the years - sorry for my denial. i've always tried to challenge everyone around me to raise the bar, i guess that passion makes me seem callous and robotic. perhaps my motivational methods are misdirected, or not the greatest, but it's always been the heart that mattered most.
sometimes (even recently) i rant like a hockey coach and it's weird, cause i never played hockey. |

gas pump survival |
|
gas was 53.7 cents/litre when this gas station on the high end of montreal street closed... the site hasn't been cleaned up very well (the gastanks are still underground and connected to the pumps)

mmm... matt mays |
|
great show last night ... mm and el torpedo played hard and got the somewhat lethargic crowd into a bit of movement ...they rocked out for a good while ...saving cocaine cowboy til the end ...it was about then that most ppl in the room seemed to realize who the band was, and they came to life a bit more.
the only exception to a great show was the opening act's mix. i'm usually not that fickle when it comes to hearing a band ...i always have my plugs in so i expect a little oddness from time to time in what i hear. i like to get rocked moreso than hear a cd quality show ...but sometimes you just can't get past the mix to enjoy the show on that level.
both members of the opening act were armed with acoustic guitars. their soundman has quite the reputation as a recording engineer (working with several big name acts and i'm fond of his other work) but this was the second time i've heard a very bad mix with him on the board. there was a very high pitched ring in the system through the entire set, a few frequencies that were verging on feedback (which did erupt for a moment towards the end of the set). it was an acoustic duo, there was no need to try and drive the room as hard and as brash as he did... it certainly didn't make their set any more interesting. after stating to the somewhat uninterested audience that he used to sing for a band called i mother earth - someone requested an IME song ... and he played it starting with the usual line 'if i can remember it' (seemed to me he already knew it fine)
phew ..matt mays had his own soundguy. a few moments into their show it was all good.
didn't get many good shots from the show i wasn't really into getting into anyone's face. there were lots of photograhers, videographers and tapers present tonight ...cool to see the band supporting it.

finally... orange chuck taylors |
|
i bought a pair of pink chuck taylors this weekend at S&R (after searching endlessly for the last 2 years for a pair of orange ones) and i saw their URL on the endless supply of plastic attached to shoes these days (i stand by my statement that the internet is for pornography not information! ...but i went anyway)
it probably won't excite some people as much as it did me ...but you can design your OWN chuck taylors ...yes ...custom shoes designed by you for only $60.00 usd ... not that much more than a pair costs here.
finally ...i can MAKE an orange pair of cons ...you can even put your name on the heel tab (or 8 letters of misc. text) just like in my underpants (for identification in case of accident).

i remembered my anniversary! |
|
today's another one of those neat dates each year that people give you stuff and/or say something nice to steph for managing to continue to put up with me (i think that was my mom). let us celebrate with the adding of chocolate to milk ...or by having lunch at woodenheads.
when we were writing our wedding vows steph wasn't keen on the obey line in love, honor and obey ... call me a traditionalist (insert very poor sense of humor here) but i really thought it was required to say it when people got married. it was the humorous point during the pretty stressful time of wedding planning. she has to remind me from time to time that she in fact, did NOT say obey.
i don't really recall our wedding vows now, even after such a short time (and the video is so windy you can't hear us talking) ... but as long as there was nothing about taking a shower everyday, i'm pretty sure i've lived up to them.

so i keep waking up between 530-6 in the morning lately (i was off this kick for a while ...but it's started again) so i went for a ride to shoot more of the city in the early morning light.
remember when 5am was the time you'd be coming home ...not the time you'd be getting up to go take pictures cause you like watching the sun rise?

laws crossing borders and boarders crossing laws |
|
watching the news on friday at the cottage i saw mark emery arrested ... on charges of conspiracy to manufacture marijuana, conspiracy to distribute seeds and conspiracy to engage in money laundering. the best part - the warrant was executed by canadian police by request of the U.S. govt. i was reading loretta nall's blog about the situation. she's always an interesting read. for a laugh read this article about the liberal's desire to get your kids stoned so they'll vote for them that i found on a right wing canadian political site.
Subway Voyeurism?
on a note related to a previous blog about the random bag searches on the NYC subway - a group of people are volunteering their bags for searching - is it some form of voyeurism or a ploy to clog the system so the bombs can get onto the subway. i think they should start searching every bag just to make sure. you'll have to sign up to the post to read the article..
The Vacation
wow i could hardly believe it as i wrote it that it's been 4 years since i went away last ...even then steph had to drag me because i was trying to find a job after finishing college and getting married ... things continued to take up my time (you know how i get when i'm focussed on something) and i never bothered to get away for any time to myself or any time with steph (other than her joining us out of town for a show once in a while - which isn't really a vacation). thankfully she's very understanding and ultimately supportive.
i had fun ... the cottage was just as i recalled from our honeymoon. it's very spacious for two people (big livingroom, 4 bedrooms and a dining area for at least 10 with a big kitchen) and totally tucked away from other cottagers. i relaxed watching some tv (heheh satelite radio too) ...and watched the ducks and loons on a quiet lake, enjoyed some beers while exploring nature shooting a bunch of pictures and thinkin' about stuff. it was great. i returned to more email to rummage through than i've had since i was taking care of a band ... i guess i forgot to tell a bunch of people i was leaving for a few days ... sorry about that mom (heheh i did post it on my blog though!)
my back eased up over the weekend before we left and i took it pretty easy while i was away ... i'm going to attempt to go for a light ride tomorrow to see how it feels.
