yay ..work that pays.
LISTENING TO: winamp streaming woxy.com

chris asked me early this week if i was available for the sarah harmer show ...loading, setup/teardown p.a. and to work the door as the will-call ticket guy. it's hard to refuse work these days, especially when you get to see a show for free in the process.

i had a chance to catch up with some folks i haven't seen in a very long time and finally got to see grant's baby girl. i really should go out way more often than i do.

great show, that sydenham st united church sure is an amazing building to explore without a guide

traffic!
LISTENING TO: our lady peace - apology

i've had my domain name since 1999 but until late last year i had never bothered with it other than posting my email address and a list of the projects i was working on (often extremely outdated). while working and playing in a band there was always something more important to be done than the self indulgent foolishness of having my own website. with an abrupt change in lifestyle i found myself so insanely bored by xmas that i decided to tinker with my own site.

i've been adding stuff slowly since january and traffic has risen a little bit each month without really doing any anything to promote. was stoked when i looked at oct's stats and saw almost 1500 unique visitors.

there's a few referrals coming from old work i've done - some from the photography and band forums i visit, some from sites swapped links with, and a lot of google referrals for images of bands in the gallery (pearl jam being the highest ranking search referral). the search index even lists a 'bill hall ckws weather' search and 'lightsabre' referrals ...hehe those made my day. some people are even coming back 3-4 times a month. thanks.

sarah slean-y goodness
LISTENING TO: the constantines - draw us lines

everytime i see sarah slean i become more infatuated with her quirky personality and her songs. last night was no exception.

steph and i got there a early to drop off some stuff chris needed for the show and stood around during the last bit of soundcheck and some last minute p.a. gear changes (holding the doors a bit late) sarah was dancing around the venue to the ipod coming through the p.a. she's so funny.

tomi swick opened the show. he's got a fantastic voice but nothing really caught me except the first song (can't recall the name) but his voice kept me listening. there is no cd available yet (recent signing to warner) but he plugged his myspace site so i'm going to check it out to listen to more.

the church was the perfect venue for this show ...every note of the piano was clearly audible (with about 8 mics on the church's grand piano) and the overall acoustics were amazing ...the room sounded warm but still had brightness in the piano and her voice resonated astoundingly.

we were hoping to hear somebody's arms or duncan ...but instead we got treated to a few requests ...one for a song by a french composer. i can't recall either the song name or the composer but as sarah acknowledged the request she couldn't quite hear the person and said 'peaches and zoos?' so it the title must sound something like that. claiming she was winning the fight with 'the virus' at a score of 5-3 she launched into the song with a sailing soprano voice that sent shivers through my entire body. *play by play of my mind during this song* she just keeps climbing to higher notes ... when is the madness gonna stop ... holy shit it isn't ... oh my god her voice is perfect. she owns me.

highlights for me were mary and the acapella version of vertigo.

i only managed to grab two shots worth processing ... but that's ok, i was there.

show us your girlfriend's tits!
chris called shortly before 9 asking if i'd do merch for the justin bird/danny michel show at elixir ...and could i be there in 20 mins. it usually takes me longer than 20 minutes to realize i'm supposed to be somewhere ...let alone get there ... but i made it.

i've been anxious to see justin play since he came back to town but have missed him a few times now. he was really great tonight, just himself and a guitar. i've snagged all the tunes he has on his website but was disappointed not to hear any of them tonight, but what i did hear i really enjoyed. when a few of us first started coming up to kingston to play shows and see bands, the gaudi birds (his old band) were one of the first bands we saw at the toucan and i always liked them. his new stuff was just as tasty.

a couple of my friends are in his band and were out to catch the show tonight, as well as some folks i hadn't seen in almost a year. nice to catch up on what everyone is up to. had a great chat with colin about good drivers, bad drivers and car crashes.

danny went on shortly after justin to a hushed room that wasn't all that packed, but were intently focussed on the stage. we were treated to a few older songs and then a stream of stuff from his new record (which isn't finished yet). about halfway through the show a couple drunk guys made their way into the show and in between songs one approached the centre of the room and shouted ''show us your girlfriend's tits!'' more than once before being assisted out politely by a doorman (and i don't mean an aj's bouncer tossing you on your ass and stompin' your face into the curb ..i mean politely assisted out while the room giggled.) a really great solo show. i'd seen him once before and was just as impressed with this show. his voice is very powerful, reminds me quite a bit of someone else i know.

sarah slean on saturday night ... it's like christmas in november. i'd better bake some cookies for santa.

free at last ... free at last ...
take that ma bell!!

after years of servitude to the mighty bell canada we've finally been given another option. cogeco now offers a digital phone service (voice over IP). after you call and say ''please sign me up this fantastic deal (including first month free)'' a nice man (or woman) from a cogeco contracted service provider will come to your home, tinker with your phone jack, replace your current cable modem with a voice over IP capable one and give you unlimited canada and u.s. calling for $44.99 a month (slightly higher if you're not a subscriber to another cogeco service). we get to keep our existing phone number, which i thought was a big bonus. our phone/digital cable and internet service are all on one invoice now ...and at a huge savings over any of the comparable bell packages.

not only do you not suffer from annoying calling restrictions placed on you by the demons at bell and their 6pm 'evening calling' ritual, but you get: voicemail, call waiting, call display, visual call waiting and call forwarding. these services alone are a 25 dollar a month addon to your bell bill.

i always wondered why bell canada charged more to make a long distance call than a call across the street ...given that these days they send packets across the same network that everyone else sends stuff across. and i guess back in the stone age (heh) when an operator connected your call by plugging in wires to a switchboard ... the long distance calls were always so stressful ...finding those far away inputs.

i called misc. random people in my phonebook today for absolutely no reason. and i liked it.

rainy sunday...
i spent most of the weekend glued to my computer playing star wars battlefront II, but i managed to sneak outside in between rain sessions to grab a few shots of the great orange sky at sunset.
